Nikki
Thanks to a very determined teenager named Kelly & the help of many rescue volunteers from both Keeshond rescue & other groups, Nikki traveled over 950 miles in just 2 days & arrived here in April, 2001. Nikki had been shaved to the skin before arriving in rescue & she faced many health challenges, ranging from whipworms to very severe heartworm disease. She had probably never lived in a home before & was lacking in some social skills & bathroom ettiquette but despite it all, she soon became known as sweet Snickers Pie. A little love & kindness goes a long way & soon Nikki showed that inspite of all the neglect & abuse she had suffered before rescue, she was determined to be a survivor. Afterall, her foster mom had promised her that if she would beat that nasty heartworm disease & not go potty in the house, she would have a loving forever family of her very own. Just 5-1/2 months after arriving in foster care, Nikki went to live with her forever family on September 10, 2001 - barely 24 hours before the tragedy that changed our nation forever. Once home, Nikki quickly became protector, confidant, companion & playmate to "her family". Sadly, in February 2003, Nikki developed cancer. On June 28,2003, Nikki went to a place just this side of heaven known as the Rainbow Bridge where she is waiting for her family so they can cross the Bridge together. Rest in peace my sweet Snickers Pie. You are the reason that Keesiekids Keeshond Rescue is here.

News
The annual rescue picnic was held on probably the coldest day of October, 2004 thanks to Michigan's ever changing weather! The furkids totally enjoyed the arctic blast while their humans shivered & tried to stay warm with hot cider and lots of good food. The picnic was a Halloween theme with trick or treat bags & toys for each Keesie & a special prize going to the Keesie in the best costume. That honor went to a very special little girl named Karly who was adorable in her Superman costume! Everyone had a wonderful time and wanted to know when next year's picnic would be. Sadly, we will not be having a 2005 rescue picnic due to one of my own dogs being very ill (please see note at bottom of web page). We hope that 2006 will be a kinder, gentler year for all & that we can once again celebrate with all of our Keesie friends & family members. Stay tuned for details!
Who We Are
Keesiekids Keeshond Rescue is a private, not for
profit rescue. We take in unwanted, abused, abandoned or otherwise needy Keeshonden from families and shelters and provide them with loving foster care until a permanent forever home meeting each dog's individual needs is found. Our first and foremost concern is ALWAYS for the welfare of each individual dog.
Keesiekids Keeshond Rescue is a member of the Michigan Purebred Dog Rescue Alliance, Oakland Pet Fund and Keeshond Rescue North America.
Keeshond Rescue of North America is an all-volunteer dog rescue group dedicated to helping Keeshonden in need of re-homing and rehabilitation. Adopting a friend
Adopting a Keeshond is not a quick process nor is it as simple as saying, "I want THAT one!" A good amount of time has been spent getting to know each dog & its specific needs through vet care, temperament testing and observation of the dog in different settings. We do this to have a better understanding of what kind of environment will be best suited to each individual dog as not every dog will thrive in the same environment.
To begin the adoption process, an application form will need to be completed & returned. It is a lengthy form and our intent is not to invade your privacy but rather to get an understanding of your expectations in a companion as well the kind of home setting the dog will live in. This information is helpful in finding the right match between dog and forever family. The application process also involves reference checks and a home check. After this process is complete, we ask that all family members come to meet the dog, and if possible bring current pets as well, to see how everyone interacts together. This is where the dog is given his or her chance to say, "I think I have found MY FAMILY!"
All dogs are up to date on vaccinations, heartworm tested and on preventative and spayed or neutered prior to adoption.
Adoptions require a contract between Keesiekids Keeshond Rescue and the adopting person or persons. This contract specifies that the dog will be treated humanely, live as an indoor house pet and receive complete vet care for the duration of the dog's life. In addition, the contract also specifies that should the adopter become unable to keep the dog, it MUST be returned to this organization. The adoption fee is $200 for dogs; $250 for puppies. This fee does not cover all of the expenses to provide necessary care to a rescue dog but it helps to offset medical expenses and occasionally other financial costs of fostering.
We generally do not place dogs in homes out of state. There are Keeshond rescue groups in many states & we would be happy to refer you to one in your area. If there is not a Keeshond rescue group in your area, we ask that you come here to complete the adoption process. We do not ship animals.

He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.

PLEASE NOTE: As of August 24, 2005, we are not able to take any additional dogs into foster care. The most beloved member of my own furcrew has been diagnosed with cancer making whatever amount of time we have left together extremely precious. If you need assistance with a Keeshond, you are welcome to e-mail me but please understand that your e-mail will be forwarded to another Keeshond rescue group as Keesiekids is not able to provide foster care at this time.
